ACCA Pakistan organized its third teachers’ conference with the name of Faculty Excel 2007 in Karachi on April 26 & 27 at Sheraton Hotel and Towers. This year the faculty excel was exclusively dedicated to the new ACCA qualification. The two-day faculty excel was an excellent opportunity for tuition providers and their faculty members to meet the ACCA expert Mr. Rhys Johnson and get equipped with the useful tips, knowledge and skills needed on the direction on the exam papers preparation. Representatives from the UCRS and Non-UCRS got the chance to network with each other and ACCA staff as well. Total 51 faculty members from UCRS and non-UCRS attended the conference.

Mr. Rhys Johnson – ACCA Education Consultant was invited to ACCA Pakistan to conduct 2007 Faculty Excel in Pakistan. Rhys Johnson has over 15 years experience working in the field of accountancy, financial training and education. Rhys has already worked with ACCA as the head of education and he was responsible for the development of the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification, undertaking a review of the ACCA professional qualification and developing the University and College Registration Scheme (UCRS).  Until recently Rhys was the managing director at FTC in Singapore where he was involved in the delivery of lectures for ACCA programmes in Singapore and Hong Kong.

The conference started with the welcome note by Almas Abbas and then handed over the session to Mr. Rhys Johnson.

The first day of the conference was spent on discussing how to run excellent ACCA exam preparation courses which included what makes an excellent lecturer; how to design a course to prepare students for ACCA exams - course structures, timings, content; how to prepare course materials (with a focus on example questions and answers); how to deliver an exam preparation lecture and conducting a course review. It also included the group exercises and discussions and groups were requested to present their point of views and practices.

In between a group photograph was taken and tea was served around 10:45. The faculty members also discussed their queries with Rhys. The lunch was served to all the participants at 1:00 p.m. and one hour break for lunch was given.

On day two, Rhys then discussed the new ACCA Paper P1 - Professional Accountant. He continued the session discussing F1, F2 and F5. After the half an hour tea break, he discussed the F9, P3, P4, and P5. After the lunch and Prayers break (1 hour and 15 minutes) Rhys discussed F3, F7, F8, P2 and P7. He shared the syllabus and contents of this examination with the participants along with the techniques to teach this paper. He recommended the participants to read the articles related to all the papers on the ACCA website as many articles are written which aren’t all published in Student Accountant. Rhys then discussed the changes made by ACCA in each paper under the new qualification and the approach of the examiners while preparing and marking the examinations.

The conference was very well received by the participants. Certificates of attendance and a copy of group photograph with Rhys Johnson were given to all participants by Rhys while a book was presented to him by Ms. Amna Butt as a token of appreciation.
